What We're Doing
Valentine Foundation created a new
endowment to support leadership training for women working
in non-profit organizations serving women and girls in the
Greater Philadelphia region. Women who were selected as scholars
were invited to attend one of three programs: The
Nonprofit Leadership Institute (NELI) at Bryn Mawr College,
Leadership
Philadelphia
or LaSalle
Leadership Initiatives: CLEAR Circles and Executive Coaching.

Feedback from Valentine Visionary Leaders
A survey of the NELI (Nonprofit Executive Leadership Institute)
Class of 2005 taken 18 months past their graduation was conducted
in 2007, and revealed:
- An increase in the number of executive director and senior-level
leadership positions since graduation.
- High levels of career satisfaction.
- Promotions were experienced by 30% of those who changed
positions and 40% who remained in their current organizations
post-NELI.
- Raises were received by 60% and 80% of those who respectively
changed positions or remained in their position post-NELI.
- The group ranked leadership skills as the highest among
knowledge and/or skill areas. Among other areas ranked highest
are: Working with Groups; Advocating Mission, Strategic Planning,
Managing Diversity and Rhetoric and Public Speaking.
- An extraordinary level of growth in the cohort’s
use of peer networks. The Fellows rated their use of networks “poor
to fair” prior to their participation in NELI and “excellent” post-NELI.
- Over 83 % are in contact with members of their Peer Learning
Communities with 45 % meeting three times within 6 months;
35 % meeting between three and six times; and 20 % meeting
more than six times in six months.
- Collaborations among alumni are strong. Over half the group
reported collaborating with NELI Fellows who were not known
to one another prior to meeting during the program.
